Health and Wellbeing..

Health and Wellbeing..

These days we often hear a lot about ‘health and wellbeing’. When we set up our practice we wanted health and wellbeing of our staff and clients to be at the very core of what we do. But what does it actually mean?

It means looking at our health and lifestyle considering four key factors: physical, intellectual, emotional and social.

It is about shifting our focus from a part of the body with symptoms of a problem, to the whole person including the body and mind.

Health is not merely the absence of disease. There are many people who may not have a disease or condition but who could be considered to have a low level of health and wellbeing. In contrast there are many people living with long term conditions who maintain good levels of health and wellbeing. So how does that work?

These individuals tend to be people who take responsibility for their health through education and being active in maintaining their health and fitness. There is evidence to show that these “activated people” get more out of health consultations and appointments than those who take less of an active role in their health.

There are lots of factors that affect a person’s health and wellbeing such as the environment we work or live in, our stress levels, our family and friend support network, our ability to balance work and life commitments, allowing time to oneself to relax/reflect and our nutrition and hydration levels. Lifestyle factors such as tobacco and alcohol consumption and our commitment to stay active also play a part.

Discussing health and working with a health practitioner can help people make positive steps to sustaining /improve their wellbeing. Being supported and hence empowered to take control of your health and mental wellbeing will set the stage for the rest of your life.
