Introducing Kinesio Tape..

Introducing Kinesio Tape..

More and more athletes are spotted wearing brightly colour tape either during training sessions or for the main event. This tape is more commonly known as Kinesio tape or Kinesio Tex tape.

The founder of Kinesio tape Dr Kenzo Kase developed this form of taping over 30 years ago and the initial concept was to reduce the build-up of fluid between tissues. Over the last 30 pyears it has become a useful tool for many clinicians working alongside other treatment techniques and may be useful for you.

What is it made from?

Kinesio tape is made to ‘mimic’ properties of the skin, this means it allows for some stretch making it much more comfortable to wear compared to the other forms of tape. It is also lightweight making you less aware of the tape when stuck to the skin. The tape can be applied with a percentage stretch related to the effect the physiotherapist wants to achieve. It can stretch up to 60% of its normal length. The tape itself is made from the elastic strands wrapped in 100% cotton fibres which mean it is latex free! The benefit of a lightweight tape is that it can be worn 24 hours a day for between 3 to 5 days so you get the most from the tape.

What does it do?

In the most simplistic terms Kinesio tape allows and assists normal circulatory function by lifting the skin. It can be used to facilitate the movement of muscles, improve joint function, decrease swelling and bruising. The most satisfying result for most people is its capacity to reduce pain.

Would the tape be useful for me?

Kinesio tape can be used for a number of different reasons and we at the clinic use this form of taping to enhance your recovery in conjunction with other interventions. If you want to know more about this taping option or think its application could help you please contact the clinic on 01284 713721 and one of our physiotherapists trained will be happy to advice.

Some common conditions where Kinesio Tape can be used:

– Shoulder injury management

– Scoliosis

– Shin splint relief

– Lymphatic drainage

– Headache management

– Carpal tunnel syndrome

– Knee pain reduction

Can I apply this myself?

Once taught how to correctly apply and remove the tape safely you can be shown how to apply it at home. It is best to avoid a pre-cut model as everyone’s bodies are different shapes and sizes. Alternate choices of tape may also differ in effect.  Kinesio tape always has a registered trademark on it.
